Manufacture of ceramics alongside stoneware has formed an important part of Thai culture for many centuries and Thailand is acknowledged as producing some of the finest in the world. Sukhothai, some 500 kilometres north of Bangkok is considered as once being the most important area.Thai ceramics from the Sukhothai era have been found throughout Asia and China as well as some important finds being discovered in sunken ships in the Gulf of Thailand which amazingly have survived centuries and still are in excellent condition today.

Although the first factories producing both ceramics and stoneware were built in Si Satchanalai, this ancient craft had indeed been in existence in Si Satchanalai for some 300 years already. Factories were also built in Sukhothai, and the industry quickly expanded north to Chiang Mai, where there are still a number of factories operating today.
